  - O.E. dumb "silent, unable to speak," from PIE *dheubh- "confusion, stupefaction, dizziness." Sense of "ignorant" (1823) comes from Ger. dumm, from the same PIE root, but with a meaning of "stupid." Applied to silent contrivances, hence dumbwaiter (1755); dumbbell (1711), with the figurative sense of "blockhead" first recorded 1920 in Amer.Eng.
